Pre-clinical, Accident & Emergency training and general surgical training, was at St. Bartholomew's Hospital with qualification in 1970 and full registration with the GMC on 4 October 1971.

Pre-registration Medicine was completed at the Prince of Wales Hospital, London N16.

Mr Vanhegan was Lecturer in Anatomy at the St.Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School from 1973-4.

The Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) was obtained in 1976.

Orthopaedic training was at the Prince of Wales Hospital, with Specialist training at Hammersmith Hospital (and associated hospitals in the Windsor Group), and Northampton General Hospital.

Specialist Accreditation in Orthopaedics at the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng) was obtained on 8 April 1982 and Mr Vanhegan became a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association in 1984.

Mr Vanhegan was locum Consultant Surgeon at the Whittington & Royal Northern Hospitals in 1985 before going into full-time Independent Practice in Harley Street, London W1 in 1985, but continued to do locum Consultant work at Ealing Hospital until 1988.
